Georgia "George" Lass is an eighteen-year-old girl; she's smart--maybe too much--not interested in the world of work and school that she quit. Her cynicism keeps her apart from her family and enrages her mother. Pushed by her, George takes a job as a file clerk. During her lunch break on her first day, she is killed by a toilet seat. She meets Rube who explains her new life as an undead to her; she died with unresolved issues and still has lessons to learn that she missed during her life. Her new job as a reaper is to reap the souls of the living who are going to die with suffering. Rube takes her under his wing and introduces her to the other members of his group: Mason, Betty and Roxie.
Thus her new life as a grim reaper begins....
